The grapes for the 2009 Cabernet Franc come from a choice 3-acre block of our Central Park West Vineyard. This vineyard, named in a nostalgic nod to the New York City origins of the Trinchero family, is located at the southern end of the St. Helena appellation. This vineyard is a level site with deep, loamy soils and good sun exposure—the ideal situation for producing classic Napa Valley Bordeaux varietals.
As a whole, 2009 was a fairly uneventful vintage, starting with very little spring frost. Late spring rains delayed irrigation needs and the warm spell in June helped curtail excessive canopy development. Usually the Napa Valley goes through several heat spikes, but in 2009 the weather was very steady through September enabling the fruit to develop gradually and evenly. However, for our red grapes in some ways it was like having two harvests. We began picking the reds, then had a period of rain and didn’t pick for nearly two weeks, then went back and finished. Extending the harvest like this led to more intense aromatics and exceptional color.
“Cabernet Franc is most often used in blends, but it’s intriguing to me to bottle some Cabernet Franc on its own. This wine has an incredible deep garnet color, chai latte and Italian coffee aromas with Cabernet Franc’s signature dried herb aromatics. It boasts juicy red fruit, has an uncharacteristically soft mouthfeel for a Cabernet Franc and finishes with luscious dark fruit flavors. Thanks to its valley floor origins, with rich soil and good sun exposure, the flannel-like tannins are soft, yet linger in the back half.” - Mario Monticelli
