2016 Vera's Vineyard, Unoaked Chardonnay
September 22- September 29, 2016
Southern Napa, like its neighbor, Carneros, is open to the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay, so grapes grown here ripen slowly, developing concentrated flavors. Vera’s vineyard, named to honor Vera Trinchero-Torres has a cool micro- climate and chalky soils ideal for producing classic fruit focused Chardonnay.
Universally speaking, 2016 produced lower yields but excellent quality and concentration. Due in part to the drought, but more so an extended period of cool weather during the bloom period in May and June, our grape clusters were on the light side and our berries stayed smaller with thicker skins. The consistently warm summer led to slightly earlier-than-normal ripening on the valley floor and high-stress conditions in our mountain vineyards. The resulting wines are beautifully fruity and focused with terrific acidity.
“The 2016 Vera’s unoaked chardonnay appeals with a straw yellow color and inviting aromas of white flowers, honey crisp apple and pear. Clean and refreshing, this wine has a medium body, incredible balanced acidity and fresh viscosity. Vibrant flavors of stone fruit and baked apple give way to a medium, long, lively, velvet and oily finish completing on a mineral note.“ – Mario Monticelli
