Vineyard Notes
This estate vineyard, nestled in Atlas Peak, is named for the iconic flat-topped, haystack-like hill which marks this growing region from afar. Atlas Peak is Napa Valley’s highest appellation and sits 2,200 feet above sea level in the Vaca Mountains. This craggy, extremely rocky site stresses the vines, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries and low yields. Only 6 acres of this vineyard is planted to Malbec.
Production Notes
The 2013 growing season began with an early budbreak and mild weather in the spring which made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident. The resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
Winemaker Notes
“The inky purple, almost black color of the Malbec makes it near impossible to see through the glass. Aromatic notes of wild flowers and violets entangled with aromas of sun-ripened blueberries are revealed on the nose, with supporting scents of mocha and volcanic earth hinting at the mountain origins. Vibrant acidity on the tongue gives way to big fruit flavors of black raspberry and blueberry underscored by hints of chocolate. Velvety tannins linger through the long, chewy finish.” —Mario Monticelli
