2013 Vera's Vineyard, Merlot
Southern Napa, like its neighbor, Carneros, is open to the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay, so grapes grown here ripen slowly, developing concentrated flavors. Vera’s vineyard, named to honor Vera Trinchero-Torres, has a cool microclimate, chalky soil and is ideal for producing deep, complex Merlot.
The 2013 growing season began with an early bud break and mild weather in the spring which made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful, consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident and the resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
“This is our most southern vineyard in Napa Valley and is not very vigorous due to the cool microclimate. Bud break happens early, but then we don’t end up picking until mid-October. However, despite this cool microclimate, this is not a timid wine. I often refer to it as the ‘Merlot for Cabernet drinkers’ because of its structure and new-world style. It has layered aromas of black raspberries, ripe, red cherry, peppercorns, and cedar wood leading into luscious and concentrated, elegant red and black fruit flavors. This wine has a great, long finish with supple tannins.” - Mario Monticelli
