Haystack Vineyard is nestled way up in Atlas Peak, Napa Valley’s highest appellation, perched 1,500 feet above sea level in the Vaca Mountains. This craggy, extremely rocky site stresses the vines, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries.
The 2013 growing season began with an early budbreak and mild weather in the spring made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful, consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring good slow ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident. The resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
“Concentrated dark purple in color this wine is bursting with aromas of dark fruit. Ripe blackberry and black cherry dominate the nose, underscored by subtle hints of crushed rock. Mouth coating and robust berry flavors envelop the palate along with subtle minerality, round mouthfeel and firm tannins. The finish is long and lingering with a chewy texture.” – Mario Monticelli
