2013 Mario's Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon
September 14- October 22, 2013
Named in honor of Mario Trinchero, this 13-acre vineyard surrounds our flagship winery in St. Helena. Located in a narrow, protected part of the Napa Valley, this vineyard is bench land fruit off the slope of Spring Mountain, with a unique rocky composition ideally situated to growing stellar Cabernet Sauvignon. This jewel of a site is sustainably farmed and produces elegant wine with floral aromas, bright red fruit flavors and a supple, satisfying texture.
The 2013 growing season began with an early budbreak and mild weather in the spring which made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident. The resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
“Ruby Red in the glass, this wine greets the nose with hints of dried cherry, cedar, briary raspberry and huckleberry compote. Upon sipping, flavors of juicy wild berry fruit come forward supported by notes of spice and toasty oak. Slightly dry on the mid palate, the wine has a lengthy ripe finish highlighted by sweet, fuzzy tannins.” — Mario Monticelli

This one was opened in a restaurant and decanted for about 45 minutes. It was extraordinarily elegant as a cab, bolder and more powerful than even the description would indicate. I opened it along with a $145 Cab from a competing Napa Valley winery and a $100 Cab from yet another and this wine beat them out. The food was elegant Spanish tapas with Paella and it held up brilliantly. I cannot overstate how elegant this wine is and how it matches/exceeds the best that Napa has to offer.
