2015 Haystack Vineyard, Malbec
September 18 – September 30, 2015
19 months, 100% French oak (50% new)
Haystack Vineyard is nestled way up in Atlas Peak, Napa Valley’s highest appellation, perched 1,500 feet above sea level in the Vaca Mountains. This craggy, extremely rocky site stresses the vines, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries.
Universally speaking, 2015 produced lower yields but excellent quality and concentration. Due in part to the drought, but more so an extended period of cool weather during the bloom period in May and June, our grape clusters were on the lighter side and our berries stayed smaller with thicker skins. The consistently warm summer led to slightly earlier-than-normal ripening on the valley floor and high stress conditions in our mountain vineyards. The resulting wines are beautifully fruity and focused with terrific acidity.
“The rich, concentrated color of the Malbec makes it near impossible to see through the glass. Aromatic notes of juicy, ripe red fruit, fresh cut flowers, lavender and subtle hints of meaty peppercorn crusted steak are revealed on the nose. This wine is medium to full bodied, with a silky entry and velvet tannins complemented by sweet oak flavors that linger. Young and vibrant feeling, this wine has a fresh lengthy finish and is drinking perfectly now with potential for aging.” —Mario Monticelli
