2010 Haystack Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon 6L
October 17-20, 2010
Haystack Vineyard is nestled way up in Atlas Peak, Napa Valley’s highest appellation that sits 1,500 feet above sea level in the Vaca Mountains. This craggy, extremely rocky site stresses the vines, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries.
The 2010 vintage started out with a very cool and wet spring that let into the characteristically dry, though slightly cooler than normal, Napa summer. Usually the Napa Valley goes through several heat spikes and in 2010 these were on the late side without significant heat until the third week of August and then additional heat waves in September and October.
“Our Haystack Cabernet is true to its mountain origins, with intense purple color and violet and mocha aromatics, yet is surprisingly approachable. Bbq figs, grilled plums and ripe fruit flavors with hints of vanilla and baking spice are reminiscent of freshly baked blueberry muffins. In 2010 this wine showed rounder tannins than in the past, yet I think it should also have incredible ageability too.” -Mario Monticelli
