Haystack Vineyard is nestled way up in Atlas Peak, Napa Valley’s highest appellation, perched 1,500 feet above sea level in the Vaca Mountains. This craggy, extremely rocky site stresses the vines, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries.
The 2013 growing season began with an early budbreak and mild weather in the spring which made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful, consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident. The resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
“This big Petite Sirah opens with an opaque ruby purple and aromas of intense lush black raspberry fruit, mineral, baking spice and cinnamon. These powerful, intense flavors carry through on the palate and lead into a long, strong, layered finish with dense tannins and extraction with balance. This wine will mature gracefully with time in the bottle.” – Mario Monticelli
