The grapes for the 2013 Petit Verdot come from a choice 3-acre block of our Central Park West Vineyard. This vineyard, named in a nostalgic nod to the New York City origins of the Trinchero family, is located at the southern end of the St. Helena appellation. This vineyard is a level site with deep, loamy soils and good sun exposure — the ideal situation for producing classic Napa Valley Bordeaux varietals. Although Petit Verdot is typically used as a blender, the soil of this sunny valley floor site yields a Petit Verdot with balanced tannins and complex flavors.
The 2013 growing season began with an early bud break and mild weather in the spring which made for a heavy berry set. We had beautiful consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. The phenolic maturity was in unison with sugar ripening. The warm fall with very little rain made for a harvest without incident. The resulting wines have beautiful balance and depth.
“Though traditionally a blending grape, I really enjoy making (and drinking) this wine on its own. While gazing at the extra deep ruby-purple color that extends to the rim, you will be wrapped in floral aromas of violet and lavender and sun drenched black fruits. Flavors of blackberry pie, crushed rock and subtle forest floor are encased in a deceivingly soft decadent package” — Mario Monticelli
